Frequently Asked Questions

Co-Op FAQ's

How long is a semester?

Each semester is 12 weeks long with a week-long break. Ideally, there will be two 6 week sessions with a break between them and additional field trips throughout the semester. Our Fall semester will end before Thanksgiving, and our Spring Semester will end before Summer break.

What type of classes do you offer?

We aim to have supplemental classes with activities and lessons that children might not get at home. While most kids learn the basics like reading, writing, and math skills at their own pace at home, we offer them experiences that they wouldn't otherwise be exposed to. Each class is planned and taught by a parent volunteer, so a class can be anything from classics like Art, Music, foreign languages, science, and history to more eclectic topics like juggling, baking, martial arts, computer programming, and first aid. The best part is, anyone can teach a class! If you have an area of expertise, a fun hobby, something that you're passionate about, an interesting job, or a particular set of skills, you can share that with the children by volunteering to teach a class! It can be one day, the whole twelve weeks, or whatever works best for you.

What is a Secular Co-Op?

We welcome all families of all faiths. In order to respect the religious beliefs of all members, we do not teach from or promote a specific religious point of view.

Will I be required to teach a class?

We are very thankful for our parents who volunteer to teach classes.  It allows us to offer unique classes while keeping the costs low. While parents are encouraged to teach, it is not required to participate in classes.  Please see our FAQs about teaching at our co-op.

Are there any other costs besides the registration fee?

Since each class is being offered by a parent volunteer, there may be a small fee so that the parent doesn't have to pay too much out of pocket. Other parents may offer to donate or loan supplies to the class to keep costs low.

My child is working above grade level for his age.  Can I put him in co-op classes above his grade level?

We recommend enrolling your child in classes according to their age.  As a parent, you know your child best.  If your child is able to interact appropriately in a higher-level class, he/she is welcome to try it out.  However, a space will not be held in the correct age group if a higher-level class is not a good fit.

What do I do if I have to miss a week of co-op?

Since every parent has a role in co-op, it is important that you let us know if you need to miss co-op.  Please let us know via Facebook if you will be absent. If you know in advance that you will be missing a week, please be sure to let the teacher know not to plan for your student that week.

How do I register?

A registration form will be posted to the home page of this website and the Facebook group page while there are positions open for each semester. You can submit it via Google Docs and our director, secretary, or treasurer will email you with information on how to send your registration check by mail, or you can turn it in at the Open house that we have before each semester begins.

Do I get a refund if our family decides not to attend classes?

As per the consent on the registration form, once a child is registered for classes, fees will not be reimbursed.  All surplus monies will be added to the general co-op fund.

Facility FAQ's

Parent Enriched Academy of Cooperative Education meets at the Unitarian Universalist Congreagtion of Columbus. We are honored to be guests of UUCC. In order to maintain our excellent relationship with the church members and leaders, as well as to continue receiving a generous reduction in rent, we are committed to treating the facility with respect, which includes:

  • leaving the facility cleaner than we find it each week,

  • always cleaning up our own messes,

  • emptying trash cans in classrooms and taking trash to dumpster,

  • putting tables and chairs back where they were,

  • sweeping and vacuuming floors as needed,

  • wiping down tables as needed,

  • walking not running in the building,

  • using our indoor voices out of respect for church personnel who may be present

How accessible is the facility?

There are ramps and sidewalks for members with limited mobility. There is a gender neutral bathroom by the nursery with a diaper changing station. There are also first aid kits available in the event of an emergency.

Teaching FAQ's

Do I need to be a teacher/have teaching experience/have a teaching degree/etc.?

No, not at all.  Just a willingness to do the job.  Many times, it is easier to start off teaching with an “easy”, laid-back subject for your first time (eg. games or station-based classes).  That way, you can get to know the students and learn how to manage a class.  Sometimes it is helpful to watch a class or two and be an assistant in the class you are interested in teaching.

What should I teach?

Most of our teachers will tell you to teach something that you like, something that you can share a talent, or something that you can have fun with.  We are an enrichment type of co-op and therefore pretty much anything goes, as long as it is age appropriate and does not contain religious content. Think about why you want your child in these classes.  Often the reason is for them to have the ability to participate in groups or partner activities that they cannot get at home, or to interact with other students in a group setting.  It is great when classes can meet those needs, so try to aim for group or partner activities if possible.

Do I get reimbursed for my expenses?  Do I get paid?

All of our teachers are parent volunteers, so we do not pay our teachers. It is up to the teacher to request supply donations from the group, set a class fee ahead of time, or speak to the treasurer (Melissa Rittenhouse) to see if there is any surplus in our budget for the semester that may be used on class supplies.

Do I have to teach by myself?

No, parents often team up to teach classes.  You can co-teach or take turns.  You will also have a few assistants in the class to help with the activities, set up, and clean up.

Do I have to teach for the full semester?

No, if you are wanting to teach for a shorter amount of time, you can teach for a 4 or 6 week unit.

Parent FAQ's

As with any Co-operative organization, every job within the co-op is filled by the donation of our precious time. Participation by all members is essential. An adult from each family is required to volunteer in some aspect.

We have 3 main levels of volunteering within the co-op that need attention.

  1. Admin level – These are yearlong jobs that are involve a lot of planning. Most of these jobs require the most attention in the Summer and Winter planning process for each new semester and then just need to be maintained throughout the year.

  2. Everyday level – These are the jobs that are done every week at co-op. Parents have the opportunity to volunteer to teach or assist in the classroom of their choice before each semester starts. If teaching isn't your cup of tea, there are plenty of other ways to help. The volunteer jobs available include: Lead Teacher, Assistant Teacher, Breakfast/Lunch Monitor, Recess Monitor, Lunch Time Cleanup, and Classroom Floaters.

  3. Extra Curricular – These are the activities that need attention outside of the regular co-op duties. This includes things like field trips, gathering supplies classroom supplies, etc.

Can I drop my child off for classes?

We are hoping that in the future there will be enough volunteers that parents can send their kid to classes while they catch up on cleaning or run errands. However, we are still a smallish group with only a handful of parents volunteering their time. Currently, everyone's help is needed during co-op hours.

Do I have to volunteer?

Yes, because it is a cooperative effort. Now, this doesn't mean that you have to teach a class, organize field trips or file paperwork. It could be something as simple and helping your child's teacher set up the class and watching the fun. You would be present if your child needs one-on-one help or is being disruptive. If your child wants more independence, you can volunteer outside their classroom by setting out snacks in the morning and cleaning up after. We need everyone involved to help the co-op run smoothly, but that doesn't mean that you're going to be required to do much more than arrive on time, have fun with the kids, and offer to pitch in here and there.

Field Trip FAQ's

How many field trips will there be?

Because this is our first year, there may not be as many field trips or extra events while we are laying the foundation for or co-op. However, we are actively planning field trips for this fall, including Conner Prairie.

Will the Field trips be on Wednesdays instead of classes?

Our semesters are short (only 12 classes), so we will try to plan field trips on other week days, like field trip Fridays! We want to have classes as well as field trips, and social outings so that the kids can play and learn together outside the classroom.

Will there be a fee for field trips?

We will try to keep the cost for all field trips as low as possible by planning around "homeschool discount days", free events, and getting group discounts when we can. While nearly all of our registration fees will go towards renting the UU facilities and covering other administrative expenses, if there is surplus it may be used to reimburse some of the gas for families that choose to car-pool.

Who can plan an event?

Anyone!  all parents are welcome to make Facebook events on our group page for local festivals, shows, or event the kids might want to meet up at (like library classes and downtown concerts) OR plan a field trip and make arrangements such as contacting the location about group rates, planning dates and times, and letting people know what the individual costs will be, and setting a meet-p location where we can gather once we arrive. It would be nice to rent a bus, but until that is possible, it is up to each family to either make carpool arrangements or drive to each trip location
