Teacher Resources

Planning to teach a class can be a lot of work, so we created a page here to help our teachers create lesson plans, fun activities, and inspiring workshops. Our goal is to make teaching for the co-op as easy as possible so that our volunteers can worry less and spend more time enjoying the classes with their kids.

What Kind of Class Would You Love to Teach?

You can teach a class on just about anything that you want! If you have a specific skill or hobby, a degree or experience in a certain field, or a topic that you are really passionate about, those are good starting places. This page has a whole list of other ideas if you want to teach, but don't know where to start. Check some of these out, right over here -------->

How to Plan Your Classes

Now that you have an idea of what topic you want to teach, You might be wondering how to spread that out into weekly lessons. First, you should decide if you would like to teach for the full semester (12 weeks) or if a 6 week class would fit better with your schedule. You can also co-teach with another parent if you want!

Once you've got that figured out, decide the main lessons of your subject that you want to cover. It helps to make a syllabus for your class with key topics for each week. Here's an example:

All About the Body

Week 1: Germs and Other Gross Stuff Skin keeps germs out, treating wounds, snot keeps germs out of your nose, make "snot slime" craft and do a bacteria experiment.

Week 2: What Keeps a body Healthy? Nutrition, water, sleep, and hygiene. Magic School bus experiment and video.

Week 3: Why do we Need Healthy Food? Digestive system puzzle, nutrients and food groups, "stomach acid" experiment, body chalk tracing and draw organs

Week 4: How do my Lungs work?  How long can you hold your breathe? Math problem, Working lung model with cigarette to show effects of smoking

Week 5: Blood Mobile! "Blood Mobile" song by TMBG, building a model circulatory system, Paper heart craft, importance of donating blood, why do we get scabs? experiment

Week 6: Messing with your Brain  central nervous system model, hand-eye coordination experiment, "How your brain gets the message" video

Planning Your Lessons

When you know what you plan on teaching each week, it makes it easier to create a lesson that will cover those important topics in a fun and memorable way. You can have "book-led" lessons where the teacher starts off my reading from a book, followed by activities to expand on the reading material. Another approach is having different activity stations set up so that kids can explore a subject in a variety of ways. You can set up your class area and activities in any way that you want!
